About Ivan Tomek, MD

Dr. Ivan Tomek is a highly experienced orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip osteoarthritis and hip replacement surgery, with a focus on the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement. After more than 20 years practicing within the Dartmouth Health system, Dr. Tomek has opened an independent orthopedic practice in the Greater Burlington area in 2025, bringing with him experience from over 3,000 anterior hip replacement procedures.
Dr. Tomek adopted the direct anterior hip technique in 2010 and performs the procedure at a freestanding ambulatory surgery center (Green Mountain Surgery Center, Colchester, VT), using a muscle-sparing approach with computer navigation. Drawing on protocols refined over two decades, his surgical technique incorporates innovative pain-management strategies that allow most patients to avoid opioid narcotics entirely, allowing for same-day discharge.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tomek has published extensively on research related to hip and knee replacement outcomes and has spoken internationally on joint replacement and healthcare economics. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, where he currently serves on the Patient Education Committee.
